Background of the Study
Ethical journalism plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse and fostering societal harmony, especially in post-conflict and conflict-prone regions. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, where ethnic and religious diversity exists, media outlets have a significant responsibility to contribute to peacebuilding efforts. Ethical journalism involves maintaining fairness, accuracy, and impartiality while reporting sensitive issues, which is crucial in preventing the spread of misinformation and hate speech that could incite violence. In recent years, media outlets in Lafia have been at the center of peacebuilding initiatives aimed at mitigating communal tensions and promoting reconciliation between different ethnic and religious groups. Through responsible reporting, journalists can highlight the importance of peace, document the experiences of marginalized groups, and challenge harmful narratives that contribute to violence (Ali & Dogo, 2024). This study will explore how ethical journalism in Lafia contributes to peacebuilding and assess its impact on societal reconciliation and the promotion of national unity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Lafia Local Government Area, the role of ethical journalism in peacebuilding remains underexplored despite its potential to foster societal stability. While the media has been recognized as a powerful tool for conflict resolution, the ethical standards governing reporting in conflict situations, including the representation of different ethnic and religious groups, are often compromised. This may lead to sensationalism, misrepresentation, and the perpetuation of stereotypes that hinder peace efforts. The challenge is to assess the extent to which journalists in Lafia adhere to ethical principles while reporting on sensitive issues and how this affects peacebuilding initiatives. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the influence of ethical journalism in promoting peace and social cohesion in Lafia (Olayemi & Ibrahim, 2024; Dike & Adamu, 2023).

The findings will provide insights into how journalists can be better trained to report ethically on sensitive issues, thus supporting peacebuilding initiatives. The study will also inform policymakers, media practitioners, and peacebuilding organizations on the importance of ethical journalism in creating a peaceful society.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on ethical journalism practices in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, with particular attention to how journalists report on conflict-related issues. Limitations of the study include potential biases in media reports and the challenge of measuring the direct impact of journalism on peacebuilding, as peace processes involve numerous social factors.
